George Mackie Library is part of the Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL), which is the biggest public library system in British Columbia. It’s located in North Delta and is open for use by book lovers and students seven days a week, but also serves the public 24/7 online. Anyone with a library card can access the library’s vast collections, browse digital content and find new titles and bestsellers by visiting the FVRL’s website.

Town History

North Delta is the most populous community in the Corporation of Delta. It was founded in 1848 and known as Annieville, which is the original settlement on the banks of the Fraser River. It is where the first commercial salmon cannery in BC was established. It was renamed as North Delta and a sub-area in town is still known as Annieville. The town is bordered by Scott Road on the east, Fraser River and 96th Avenue on the north, Burns Bog on the west, and Clark Drive on the south.

The community is known as the home of the Burns Bog, which is the biggest domed peat bog in the country. It occupies a quarter of Delta, BC. It is named after its former owner, Dominic Burns. It is now a protected and managed as a natural ecosystem.

Members of the George Mackie Library have access to a wide range of resources. The Delta library has a floating collection that contains more than 1.3 million items, from CDs, DVDs, printed titles, and much more. They also provide digital content through the FVRL website that includes free audio books and eBooks that can be downloaded and placed on users’ portable devices. Some of the items that are free to download include classics, best-selling novels, children’s books, language tutorials and more.

The Delta library also provides free adult learning materials and programs. Their staff can recommend education programs within the community that includes one-on-one tutoring.

George Mackie Library also has a Social Catalogue that allows users to have an interactive experience. It features a more robust search engine and allows the users to tag, rate, review and comment on Delta library materials.

North Delta in the News

North Delta Welcomes 1 of 12 Early Years Centers in BC

Families in North Delta will be able to enjoy the benefits of comprehensive early learning program for pre-school children. The first of 12 early year’s centers in BC will be located at the North Delta Recreation Centre. The Delta kids centre is a pilot project of the BC Early Years Strategy and will be fully functional by June 2015. Aside from the centre, parent workshops will be held in Delta library facilities, such as the George Mackie Library.
