Libraries May Be Closed, But Their Virtual Resources Are Ready and Waiting

Richmond Public Library Online Resources RPL Reading Challenge

Libraries throughout BC have been quick to respond to the changing needs of its patrons amid the physical distancing measures enacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While physical locations have closed, library’s virtual doors have been thrown wide open. Though libraries have long offered virtual resources to their patrons over the past few years, we are seeing increased creativity in how librarians can connect with their patrons virtually as a result of this pandemic.

The responsiveness of libraries to our current situation have not gone unnoticed. Rob Fleming, BC’s Minister of Education, said he was “proud to see the innovative ways our libraries continue to support and connect with people who want to learn, explore and be entertained through digital resources” as he announced a one-time $3-million government investment in public libraries. This funding will allow libraries to enhance online library programs and materials through the purchase of technology, ebooks, and other online services that people can access with their library cards.

As we move forward in these unchartered areas, this is going to become increasingly important. Libraries are often the first point of contact for newcomers to BC. While the physical locations may be closed, newcomers continue to need access to the myriad of resources and services available at their local library. These resources and services are often the lifeline of newcomers to Canada.

Free Resources are Available Through a Variety of Local Public Libraries

Current resources and services are changing as we move forward through this crisis, however, there are many great choices already in place. I have listed a few select standouts below, but I do recommend you head over to your local library’s webpage to find programs and services particular to your needs. I encourage you to share this information with other newcomers as we continue to grow our online communities. If you’re not already aware, you can now obtain a library card virtually. If you don’t yet have a library card, you may need one to access the resources available.
