Discovering the Value of Libraries as a Newcomer

Posted on: January 21, 2025

My name is Rumi, and I’m from South Korea. I moved to Canada in 2018, and have lived in different cities in BC, including Victoria, Vancouver, and now Nelson. As a newcomer, I loved discovering the value of libraries as a newcomer. I soon learned that libraries were the best places for me to access information and meet new people. This led me to join the Library Champions Project at the Nelson Public Library. My goal was to help others discover the benefits of libraries.

Joining the Library Champions Project

I learned about the Library Champions Project through the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) in Nelson. Having experienced the benefits of libraries firsthand, I was inspired to join the project and help newcomers connect with local libraries and explore the various programs they offer.

Responsibilities and Impact as a Library Champion

As a Library Champion, my responsibilities are varied. They include raising awareness about library’s programs, assisting newcomers in connecting with communities, and sharing information about the resources/services provided. I engaged with new arrivals and locals to promote the library as a valuable resource for everyone. I also helped others in also discovering the value of libraries as a newcomer.

It was surprising to find that many were unaware of the diverse range of programs and services offered. Raising awareness has been an integral part of my role as a Library Champion. It has been fulfilling to see more people engaging with and benefiting from these resources.

The Nelson Public Library, in particular, is a vital resource for newcomers. IMO, language resources, community events, and access to technology are some of the most important services libraries provide for newcomers. These resources help foster connections and improve the quality of life for new arrivals.  Libraries have an extensive range of useful resources, including books, audiovisual materials, computer and printer access. Plus they also have literacy programs and tech support, making them an essential hub for learning, connection, and personal growth.

Memorable Experiences Connecting Newcomers to Resources

I once encountered a fellow newcomer who was searching for a place to learn English and make new friends. I shared information about the library’s Cookie and Tea Conversation events. They attended the event, which made them feel more confident and connected within the community. This experience was truly memorable for me.

Later, I met a newcomer who was facing challenges securing employment due to a lack of access to professional resources. By introducing them to the library’s free LinkedIn Learning courses, they were able to gain new skills, improve their resume, and ultimately boost their confidence in the job search process. This experience highlighted the significance of libraries in providing equal access to education and professional development. It also demonstrated the impact that Library Champions can have in uplifting members of their community.

Libraries as Community Support Hubs for Newcomers

Libraries and communities support newcomers by organizing a wide range of inclusive events, providing access to essential resources like language learning materials. They also foster a welcoming atmosphere that encourages connection and belonging. By understanding unique challenges faced by newcomers, libraries create targeted programs and initiatives that cater to needs and promote inclusivity.

Encouraging Newcomers to Explore Library Resources

I would encourage newcomers to visit their local libraries and explore the vast array of resources and services available. Libraries offer much more than just books, providing essential tools for language learning, professional development, and community engagement. By taking advantage of these resources, newcomers can connect with their community, overcome challenges, and create a sense of belonging. It’s so joyful to see people discovering the value of libraries as a newcomer.

Personal Growth Through Volunteering

Participating in the Library Champions Project has helped me enhance my communication skills, people skills, and cultural agility. It has also allowed me to establish stronger connections with my community, inspiring me to continue volunteering and making positive contributions to my new home.

As a part of the first Library Champions Project in the Kootenays, I am excited to continue connecting people with valuable resources and fostering a sense of community among residents in the area. The diverse range of resources and services provided by libraries and other agencies in the Kootenay region, specifically the Nelson Public Library and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL), have undoubtedly played an essential role in empowering individuals and strengthening the community.

My experience as a Library Champion has motivated me to continue volunteering and actively contributing to my community. It has also inspired me to further develop my people and communication skills to better serve those around me. Through this role, I have recognized the importance of connecting people with valuable resources and fostering a sense of belonging, which I aim to prioritize in my future endeavours.

I would encourage anyone considering becoming a Library Champion to be open-minded, approachable, and passionate about making a positive impact on their community. It is an incredibly rewarding experience that not only helps others but also fosters personal and professional growth. Embrace the opportunity to engage with people from diverse backgrounds and take the initiative in connecting them with valuable resources.

The most surprising part of my move to Canada has been the incredible diversity of people and cultures I’ve encountered. This exposure to different customs, traditions, and ways of life has broadened my perspective and enriched my experience as a newcomer. Embracing this diversity has allowed me to learn and grow in ways I never imagined.

Life in the Kootenays: Community, Nature, and Connection

Moving to the Kootenays has been a breath of fresh air, with its stunning natural beauty and welcoming, close-knit community. The people here have been warm and friendly, making me feel at home since my arrival. I’ve enjoyed exploring the great outdoors and getting involved in local events and activities.

Living in a small community has been a truly enjoyable experience. The sense of camaraderie and support among residents has made it easy to form meaningful connections and engage in local events. I appreciate the slower pace and the opportunity to get to know my neighbours on a more personal level, fostering a sense of belonging that can sometimes be challenging for newcomers to find.

Advice for Newcomers: Embrace Libraries and Community Engagement

I want to encourage other newcomers to embrace their local libraries and community agencies as valuable resources for personal and professional growth. Volunteering and participating in community events can help create a sense of belonging, making the transition to a new country smoother and more fulfilling. Building connections with your neighbours and engaging in local activities can help you feel at home in your new surroundings, creating a strong foundation for a successful and happy life in Canada.
