Mothers born outside Canada had half of B.C. babies born last year: StatCan

Experts say affordability remains a limiting factor as B.C.’s birthrate continues to decline.

Almost half of all babies born in B.C. last year were to mothers who were born outside of Canada, according to a new Statistics Canada study that shows the role of immigration in sustaining the province’s population and birthrate.

But experts said that while new arrivals clearly boost B.C.’s population, they quickly take on the fertility patterns of the Canadian-born population due to some of the same factors responsible for the province’s declining birthrate, including affordability.
