Library services for newcomers in BCLibrary Services for Newcomers in B.C.

My name is Adris Walli, a gym obsessed, books lover and a past Library Champions. I came from Panjshir, Afghanistan in 2014. New to the city of Vancouver, I found myself fascinated with the beautiful and rich libraries around, especially the Vancouver Public Library, Central branch. Being a book lover, my day would start and end at the Central Library. I was sure that I wanted to do some sort of volunteer work as my first job in Canada, so when I learned of the Library Champions Project (LCP), I knew this is what I wanted to do and I jumped right in.

For those who don’t know, LCP mainly focuses on outreaching to communities and creating awareness about library services for newcomers in BC in general. I found it quite surprising that a large number of people who have been living in Canada for ages don’t have a clue about the variety of amazing facilities and services provided by libraries here. Most people I outreached to had a preconceived notion that one only visits library to borrow books. Library services to newcomers in BC include a lot more than that. There are books, but there’s also classes, workshops, movie nights, art exhibitions, eBooks, booking computers, DVDs etc. I can go on and on. You name it – I have utilized it.

Libraries became my second home, and I noticed that no matter what age you are: kids, teenagers, adults or seniors – we all belong. Its not just a place for college students as it is in many countries, including where I came from.  Each library is unique, fully equipped, rich and beautiful.

This is what I learned about Canada: everyone is welcome. The Diversity here is so wonderful. We have people from different regions, countries, colours, races, religions and cultures. We love and respect each other without any bias. I believe this diversity makes Canada one of the greatest countries in the world. Realizing this, I would not have stressed so much about adapting to this new country, lifestyle and people. I found Canada a warm loving and respectful country. There are so many people, organizations and government offices that provided immense amount of support and encouragement.

My experience with the LCP showed me a community that consists of many passionate, hardworking and dedicated individuals. They live the true essence of being Canadian in each and every way. They are positive, strong and amazing. I see the Future Canada in each of them.

When I meet other newcomers, I want them to know that they are always welcome in this beautiful country. Each person is an important member of our communities and contributes greatly to this cultural mosaic of Canada.
