Discovering the Beauty of BC
Moving to British Columbia from India was life changing. BC offers a good quality of life, stunning nature, clean environment, and vibrant communities. I am really enjoying my new home and am trying to make time to explore and discover my new community on my journey from India to British Columbia.
Becoming a Library Champion
In spring 2023, I had joined the Library Champions Project. This program was particularly valuable to me as a recent immigrant. In the training sessions, I learned about resources and programs for successful integration into Canadian society. The training sessions were engaging and gave me an insight into programs, services, and resources available to me as a recent immigrant, while training me how to conduct outreach into our communities.
Libraries: A Gateway to Knowledge and Community
Libraries in BC offer an impressive range of free services. You can access to books, magazines, and movies, as well as digital resources like eBooks and audiobooks. You can access computers and internet for free and attend workshops and classes on diverse topics such as financial management and job search strategies. Thanks to an information session with the Okanagan Regional Library, I improved my digital literacy, learning about password security and phishing.
Connecting Communities Through Presentations
During my training, I delivered a PowerPoint presentation titled “Connecting Communities.” This presentation explored the intersection of libraries, the Library Champions Project content, and the NewToBC website. It was an enriching experience that allowed me to showcase how these resources collectively support newcomers in integrating into Canadian society.
The Impact of Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants
I am deeply indebted to the Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants program at Douglas College. This program provided me with financial support, training sessions, and certifications on all aspects of finding employment in BC. Topics covered included mental health, understanding core values, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Participating in Toastmasters was also great for my personal and professional development. My career coach at Douglas College was the one who introduced me to the Library Champions Project.
Missing Home and Family
I am really loving life in BC, but I also deeply miss spending time with my mom and dad in India. I miss their presence and warmth and our family gatherings. I also miss the festivals and celebrations back home. I would love to have my parents join me in Canada once I am more settled. I look forward to creating new memories together in a new chapter of our lives.
Embracing Community and Professional Growth
Learning about library and settlement resources and being a Library Champion in my community has connected me with new people, helped me feel more integrated, and made me feel more connected to my new home. Libraries, especially the Tommy Douglas Library, have surprised me with their extensive range of services, including free access to books, digital resources, and practical services like computer use and printing.
A Diverse Career Path
Since arriving in Canada my journey from India to British Columbia, I have volunteered at Don’t Go Hungry (DGH) in Burnaby, BC, where I helped manage and distribute food. I participated in the Library Champions Project with NewToBC, promoting library resources and contributing to library programming. And, recently, I began my career as a Wildlife Ranger at Grouse Mountain. Riding the Skyride at Grouse Mountain during my job interview was one of the most exciting moments for me.
Advice for Immigrants
Volunteering is a way to connect with the community, gain valuable experience, and contribute meaningfully to society. Settlement services and community programs are really helpful in job search guidance. Networking through professional associations and online platforms like LinkedIn helps you connect you with others. Embracing opportunities that initially seem outside your comfort zone can effectively advance your career prospects. Every chance you have to meet people, you should take.
Reflecting on the Journey
If I could visit my past self before moving to Canada, I would tell myself to be patient, and embrace uncertainty. I would encourage myself to just accept the journey, to be open to opportunities for learning Experience and growth, and trust in the process of letting a new life unfold. I am proud of my growth since coming to Canada. From volunteering in community projects to embracing new opportunities in my career, each step has helped me become stronger. I look forward to exploring more of BC, creating new memories, and building my new life in BC.
