The Power of Community Through the Library Champions Project

Posted on: November 12, 2024

Nina, Program Facilitator

What made this group of Library Champions exceptional was their unique blend of shared experiences and diverse perspectives. While each group has its own distinctive qualities, this one stood out for its warm, inclusive dynamics. This group had six women from Iran and one man from China, who formed strong bonds over their cultural heritage, life experiences. They shared an enthusiasm for making a difference in their community, and harnessing the power of community through the library champions project.

Their positive energy was palpable. Most were already actively involved in the community through work and volunteering. This collective enthusiasm fostered a spirit of mentoring and debriefing, allowing them to learn from each other’s experiences. The trust and relatability within the group was evident: they both laughed and cried together and genuinely enjoyed each other’s company.

Their outreach efforts were nothing short of innovative. One Champion created a series of short videos in Farsi, introducing library resources and sharing them on Instagram, where her sizable following helped spread the message. Another Champion, a skilled web developer, built a website cataloging online resources available at North Shore libraries. Their collaboration and knowledge-sharing was inspiring.

When I think of this group, I think of all the laughter, and the heartfelt storytelling. It’s a testament to the power of shared experiences and the strong bonds that can form when people come together, and the power of community through the Library Champions Project.

Stories from the Library Champions

Aseman: Building Connections through Volunteering

Volunteering as a Library Champion was deeply fulfilling for me. What I appreciated most was the strong sense of community and teamwork. Being part of a group of like-minded individuals who were all passionate about making the library more accessible and welcoming was truly inspiring. We supported each other, shared ideas, and learned together, which created a warm and collaborative environment. It was amazing to see how our collective efforts could make such a big difference.

My best learning moment came when I saw firsthand how powerful libraries can be in changing lives, and then through personally experiencing the power of community through the Library Champions Project. I remember helping a newcomer improve their English skills using library resources. Later, I saw them participating confidently in a community event, and it hit me how significant our work was. That moment taught me that libraries are not just about booksโ€”they are about empowering people and fostering personal growth.

I know my own challenges were adjusting to the cultural and social differences. Even though my community was welcoming, it took time for me to understand and integrate into the local customs and way of life. Having this information earlier would have made my transition smoother and helped me connect with others more quickly. Knowing about the different programs, especially those offered by libraries, would have been incredibly helpful in getting settled. Knowing that I help others who are experiencing the same struggles is really empowering.

Volunteering as a Library Champion, building meaningful relationships, and making a positive impact on my community are achievements Iโ€™m particularly proud of. These experiences have not only enhanced my skills but also reinforced my commitment to community service.

Elnaz: New Friends, New Discoveries

Moving to Canada was challenging but becoming a Library Champion helped me in ways I never expected. I made new friends, learned about the resources available for skilled immigrants, and explored the beautiful natural surroundings of BC. The program introduced me to a new support system, and Ninaโ€™s guidance was helpful in making my journey a positive one.

One of the highlights for me was learning about the Skilled Immigrant Info Centre, which opened doors to resources I didnโ€™t know existed. I also found that volunteering was a powerful way to build a network and integrate into Canadian society.

Jake: Cultural Integration and Empowerment

Joining the Library Champions program eased my transition to a new country. Nina opened my eyes to the wealth of resources libraries offer and introduced us to Canadian culture and history of the First Nations. I also learned about different cultures from my peers in this group, which was exciting and fun.

Our team is composed of Iranian and Chinese members, and I am the only one from China. We had good conversations and discussions and discovered that we share many cultural similarities. We formed a close-knit group, supporting one another through a WhatsApp group for casual chats and discussions. When we were ready, we got the chance and tools to reach other new immigrants and introduce the library services. I created this website to showcase the services and resources available. It is a great way to bring more exciting topics to conversations. In this way, I was more accepted by the community. This experience helped me integrate more easily.

In addition to giving me a chance to know the library, practice English, and learn about different cultures, this program also helped me sharpen my IT skills. I learned how libraries provide not just books, but access to learning tools like LinkedIn Learning (free with your library card), and I continually discover services and programs that amaze me.

We are enjoying living in BC. We have more time to enjoy our lives. Mountains, beaches, and open sports fields have become essential parts of our lives. My son and I love sports. In the winter, we go skiing, and during all seasons, when it’s not raining, we enjoy jogging along the beach or playing soccer, basketball, or any outdoor sports we are interested in at that moment. I just have to convince my family that we made the right move, but that may take more time.

Maryam: Journalism Meets Community Service

With my background in journalism, the Library Champions program allowed me to leverage my communication skills to introduce library services to others. This teamwork reminded me how collective efforts can achieve shared goals. Additionally, seeing our joint efforts to raise community awareness about library services was very encouraging.

My best learning moment was realizing the profound impact of library services on people’s lives. As a journalist, witnessing individuals find the information they need and create new stories for themselves was incredibly valuable.

I wish I had known more about the resources and services available for immigrants before moving here. This information could have helped me adapt more easily and quickly to the new environment and benefit from the available services.

My biggest accomplishment has been serving the community as a Library Champion and using my journalism skills to introduce library services to others. This experience has given me more confidence to continue my path and help others. Becoming a Library Champion is an excellent opportunity to serve the community, gain new experiences, and build meaningful relationships. This role allows you to positively impact others’ lives while benefiting from the process yourself.

Siranoush: Making Creative Connections

I proudly served as a volunteering Library Champion and contribute to the Canadian and Cultural communities while embracing new opportunities. This experience allowed me to build meaningful connections, establish friendships, and integrate into my new home. The guidance and support of Ms. Nina and Ms. Shideh was incredibly welcoming and supportive โ€“ they continually inspired us to expand our networks and I feel a sense of belonging in my community.

One of the most memorable moments during my time as a Library Champion was discovering that the North Vancouver Library has a recording space. As a musician, this resource is incredibly exciting for me. I plan to use it to improve my skills and record student performances, to help them improve and build their confidence.

Coming from Iran, where events and programs for children are less prevalent, I am constantly amazed by the abundance of such activities and resources here. The libraryโ€™s many resources, from the Libby app to practical items like headphones, laptops, and even mountain backpacks, have expanded my world. The presence of a coffee shop in the library enhances networking opportunities, and Iโ€™m also impressed by how affordable book purchases can be. Joining challenging book clubs can be incredibly rewarding. Memberships such as LinkedIn, Kanopy, and Solaro are the most valuable ones. Additionally, the collaboration room is an exceptional feature of the library.

The power of community through the Library Champions Project and volunteering as a Library Champion has given me the chance to introduce the library to others, both in person and online. Iโ€™ve created several videos showcasing the North Vancouver Library and downtown library with Farsi descriptions, which has helped me make friends, both online and in real life.

The first thing I heard was “Welcome to Canada,” and I’ll never forget it. I started my new life there with a warm welcome, patience, and heartwarming hospitality. Canadians always encouraged me with their beautiful smiles, which I truly appreciated. I recognize that managing my son’s maladaptation posed a major challenge, but it’s reassuring to know that it improved after his teachers intervened. Everything has improved significantly.

Zahra: Making a Difference Together

Volunteering as a Library Champion was a memorable and enriching experience. I loved the in-person tours of different libraries and the chance to meet new people who shared similar challenges and experiences. Learning about library services and sharing that knowledge with other immigrants helped me feel more connected to my new community.

My biggest accomplishment so far is that I think I have found my way here. I volunteered in different organizations and learned a lot as well as informing immigrants about the variety of services offered.

It was a unique experience to expand our knowledge about libraries, and getting the opportunity to talk to people about services that can help them to settle down better. For example, some immigrants struggle to amuse their children after getting here. So, knowing about these free services, help them to spend some quality time with their children.

I would like to thank the people who were involved in this program. I appreciate Nina’s knowledge, kindness, and patience in leading our discussions, as well as managing each session to be as beneficial as possible. Also, thanks to Shideh and Kate who gave us in-person library tours, and Kathleen who shared their knowledge with us. Last but not least, I thank our group members with whom we had this lovely experience and whom I share the power of community through the Library Champions Project.

Final Thoughts

The Library Champions Project impacts individuals and communities. This group of Champions showed that collective efforts make a difference. They learned from one another, supported each other, and ultimately became a source of empowerment for others in their community.

As the facilitator, Iโ€™ve been continually inspired by the resilience, passion, and creativity these Champions have shown. I look forward to seeing what they accomplish next.
